Uhlan

Diane McCormick

Terrible times call for terrible heroes.

The Abominae were mankind’s only true predators. Vicious, strong and intelligent, the Mordyra and Canavars lusted for human flesh. After 500 years, the Vindicae—or Uhlans, as they call themselves—hunted them to extinction. Having worked themselves out of a job, the hunters spent the next twenty years enjoying their retirement, while the Abominae dwindled to nothing more than characters in fantasy novels.

But now someone has brought them back. And they have a queen who is ruthless, ambitious and plans to raise the Abominae from extinct apex predators to rulers in a new world order. People will not just live under the thumb of the formerly living—they will be cattle. Most predators just want to eat you. The Abominae want to farm you.

People are dying strangely in the poor quarters of Lositania City. The Sheriff, a retired Uhlan, worries that a serial killer is on the loose, but before too long, he can no longer deny the truth: Mordyra are loose in the city and they’re preying on the poor. The Uhlans will have to come out of retirement and hunt again. Seven young people are selected to become Vindicae, who will learn not only the skills needed to fight the Abominae, but how to work with vidrigs, their winged mounts. With little time and an enemy that is growing in strength by the minute, these young people need to become the hunters who can save the world from a terrifying and determined enemy.

The Abominae make their most daring move yet—an invasion into the heart of Lositania City, terrorizing the people and exposing the Uhlans, who have always fought them in secret to prevent public panic. After the Uhlans beat them back to Atra Teris, they learn that the children of a raided village are being held as the Abominae Queen’s private reserve of “gourmet” blood. As the Uhlans set out to rescue the children, the Abominae Queen is planning to overthrow the throne of Altrove and establish rule under the Abominae. With division, betrayal and murder all around them, the Uhlans must also not only save the children; they must also try to stop a formidable enemy from seizing the crown.

The Abominae takeover is spreading and only the Uhlans can stop them from realizing their dream of becoming the dominant race in the world. The exhausted Uhlans will have to battle them, even though they have fought hard and lost so much. The Abominae cannot be defeated by a handful of teenagers and elderly men, though. As the Uhlans unite other countries to help them bear arms against the Abominae, the balance of light and darkness wavers with every sword drawn.
